Yet another open letter…

Jump to Comments

This letter is addressed to film makers who in a moment of madness make movies like “Yaaradi Nee Mogini(YNM)”, “Race”, “Tashan” and the likes.

Dear Sir,

I am an average twenty something , who grew up on the staple diet of watching masala movies right through 90’s, slightly matured later on to appreciate really good movies made by Mani Rathnam and the likes, worships the one and only thalaivar (Rajini, of course), uttufies peter in blog about movies, meejic and Rehman and every weekend religiously watches movies made by you people in theater/dvd/tv. Sometimes with pleasure and sometimes with pain. In short, a movie buff.

We, the audience, you say, should try to understand the efforts you people put into making a movie , and watch movies only in theaters and not on “thiruttu” vcds/dvds. We oblige, despite the unearthly tickets prices in multiplexes. And all we expect in return is some entertainment in the name of decent cinema. I am unable to fathom the reason why, but off late the movies you’ve been churning out lately are more of pain.

Just how stupid do you think we, the audience, are when you make such type of movies? Do you think the moment we enter the cinema hall we’ll become brainless zombies and will lap up anything and everything you throw at us ?? Is it wrong to expect a bit of logic in the movies you make? Even a 10 year old will point fingers at the glaring mistakes you make. And to top it all, if a film reviewer criticizes and thrashes your movie you hold a grudge against him/her. Isn’t there something called work ethics? Do you even watch the despicable movies that you make? If you slip once or twice you may be forgiven. But if an entire bunch of directors decide to go on a making-idiotic movies- rampage, how can you blame the audience for not coming to the theaters to watch the crap of a movie that you’ve made?

And also when was the last time the heroine in you movie was a decent lady? Either she has to be the singing and dancing doll dressed in the skimpiest of clothes who comes and goes whenever its time to gyrate to ear drum-tearing tunes with lyrics full of double entendres and vulgar innuendos or she’s this extremely nasty woman who’s full of vice and is plotting all the time to bring about the downfall of the hero and is brought to senses by the hero in the climax or she’s the snob who turns down the advances of the hero for some trivial reason and in the end comes and falls in his feet or last but most liked by the mega serial makers — she’s the perfect woman who can see/hear/do no evil types.

Gimme a break. Why does everything has to be larger than life? Will it be ok for you if your wife/sister is of any one of the above types? And the best part is, if any lady dresses up the way she does in the movies for some function involving the so called “dignitaries” she’s dragged all over the place by “katchies” and made to issue an apology. Hypocrites !!!!

You may have made some good movies in the past. But if you cannot make decent movies anymore, please quit. Don’t lift stories from all over the world in the name of remakes and torture us more. We’d be happier to watch the original movies with subtitles rather than sit through the rubbish that you make. If making movies is all that you’ve ever lived for, make sure you do some justice to it. Even if you make one movie in 4 years see to it that it has an impact. This is just a piece of suggestion if I may say so.

Thank You for reading this far.

PS: This post resulted out of sheer exasperation. I watched “The Prestige” and “YNM” last week. 2 movies as different as chalk and cheese. At the end of “YNM” my brother and I were so riled that we stood up and applauded the director who had the guts to make such a movie and the lead actors who’d left their brains at home during the course of the shooting . I’m sure there are a lot of movies to be included in this list. Thankfully I didn’t watch movies like 1 2 3, Bheema etc .

  • YNM is a total crap..don`t remind me of the title even..

  • The grapevine has it that the Tamil Nadu Government has mandated the highest reservation for dumb movies and mega serials, 69% in all – 30% for Backward Brains, 20% for Most Backward Brains, 18% for Scheduled Brainless, and 1% for Naturally Brainless :)

  • you have been tagged!!

  • Alright, you are taking movies way to seriously…which is good. I haven’t watched YNM (isnt that a copy of some telegu movie)? I totally second you on movies which are pathetic.

    I watched this sad movie the other day, I don’t remember the name…after watching the movie I felt so embarrassed about it. You have a hero coming from somewhere exactly at the last moment…the Villan running behind him from no where, you have the hero’s family tied up somewhere and the police with their famous dialogue “Hands up” after everything is done(Same story new day)….

    And I need to appreciate your guts….You watched YNM after watching a god-sent movie “The Prestige”… I can imagine your state…lol

    And about girls singing and dancing doll dressed in the skimpiest of clothes who comes and goes whenever its time to gyrate to ear drum-tearing tunes with lyrics full of double entendres and vulgar innuendos…I have no words for ya…

  • @ DKS
    Can’t agree more with you.

    @ The Rational Fool
    At this rate,I won’t be surprised if in less than a year suicide rates go up. The reason for suicide undoubtedly would be watching such movies .
    Sample this “punch” dialogue in a recent movie..
    “Melerndhu Vizhundha Aruvi… Keezherndhu parandha Kuruvi.. ” :(
    Enna kodumai sir idhu??

    @priyaiyer
    Will take it up soon :)

  • @VC
    Welcome here.. Thanks :) Please DO NOT even attempt to watch YNM. Yes it a blatant copy of “Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule”. Movies like the one you’ve mentioned are a dime a dozen out here in India. Thanks for the commiserations and appreciations. :)
    Now I sound like TR don’t i ;) And yes I received your comment first time around.

    @rajaji
    Great minds think alike shall I say.. ;)
    And yes I second your prayer.. :)

    @ aparna
    Danks ba :)

  • Aparna,
    >> Thanks for the commiserations and appriciations.
    That sounds more like his son than himself :P

  • Pls note YNM is a official remake and not a copy !!! Race deserves Oscar award for its twists and turns…. You guys are so upset that you are not able to guess what scene would come next in Race… Thats it :) :) :)

  • All these films you mentioned… YNM, Sparrow et. al.. all these producers/directors think they can get away with any crap they give just because the first week collections are so high, and they profit out of it, they go back to the hotel-room/drawing board, think hard and produce more crap :)
    I heard the first week collections for Kuruvi were the highest for any Vijay film, the film is already a hit, and has already made profit !!! Expect an Eagle or a vulture next time…

    I hope someday people suppress the urge to watch a movie in the first week itself, wait for reviews, then watch it.. so that only a good film becomes a true ‘hit’, but I guess that day is not in sight yet :)

    Btw, nice post.. u’ve captured the feelings of the twenties aptly :)

    Like father like son shall we say.. :)

    @ Vijay Ganesh
    I said “copy of” and not “copied from” :P .I know its slightly mokkai but I dont want to be euphemistic for this stupid movie. :)

    @SRK
    Its quite difficult to suppress the urge to watch the movie in the first week thanks to the build ups these ppl give. And the dumb head directors make sure that they CASH IN on it. :)
    Thanks :)

  • You have watched Yaradi Nee Mohini compeltely.. and i am recommending you for Red and White Bravery awards ..

    My only intention to watch that movie was Nayantara and i decided that i would better stare at her wallpaper than watching this crap…

  • @sreekrishananv
    Welcome here…Danks ba.. Atleast something in return for watching that movie .. :) You did a right thing by deciding to stare at the poster.. :)
