The days leading up to the meet were filled with anticipation and enthusiasm. We were going to meet up after close to 8 months. A lot had happened in these 8 months. We were extremely eager to meet and pour out all the emotions that had been confined to ourselves over the past months. No matter how much technology shrinks the world, an email, an im, a skype voice chat, a blog post saying how much we miss each other, a phone call… none of these come anywhere close to the joy and the satisfaction we get on meeting loved ones after a long long time.
So we’d planned to meet on last Friday evening, go for a coffee, hit the beach, relive all those beautiful memories of the summer of 2007, get soaked in the water and the simple joys and then call it a day. I was so much looking forward to the meet that I was literally counting minutes and waiting for the clock to strike 4. The rain God decided to come to the party as well. It rained the whole day. Just when I was thought we were going to get drenched in rain as well, thereby fulfilling our long time wish, Peppermint called in sick. I was fuming with rage in an instant , that the plan which we’d made up so carefully was crumbling right in front of my eyes. But reality began to sink in. If its a no, it stays a no. Sigh, so much for extensive planning and answering if’s and but’s.
I lost interest on everything else. Suddenly the day began to stretch endlessly. I knew I wasn’t the only person having to handle immense disappointment at that point of time. That was when the heart took control and I spent the rest of the dull and desolate. The weekend had little to cheer about and before I knew it I was back to the grind at work.
For two full days there was no word form Peppermint. I lost my all my cool and patience on Tuesday and tried to call, but in vain. Peppermint could not be reached.
I was close to tears at that point of time. On Tuesday night there was a call at around 11.30 in the night. I was half asleep and so cut the call without even bothering to check who’d called. As luck would have it was the call I’d been expecting for 2 days.
Frustrated and cursing myself, I called up on Wednesday morning. After a lot of cajoling and sweet talking from the other side I finally relented and there was an inkling of hope that we might meet up that evening. I was excited as hell all over again. Frantic calls and text messages kept flying here and there to confirm, double confirm , hell confirm till Peppermint actually boarded the train and I could here the rumbling of the train over the phone.
I reached just a moment before the train arrived at the MRTS station. Its quite easy to spot your beloved, even in crowd. We rushed towards each other and hugged. It was magical to actually meet after longing to meet for close to 3 weeks of agonizing so-near-yet-so-far wait. We held on for a moment or two when Thala, obviously irritated by the fact that we get to hug right in the middle of the road, broke us apart.
We walked, hand in hand till the main road, occasionally swinging our hands like kindergarten kids. We made our way giggling and chattering to the nearest cake shop and seated ourselves quite comfortably. What followed was two hours of undiluted fun. Filling in each other about what had been happening in our lives for the past 8 months, giggling like school kids, reminiscing the fun we had last summer, how we missed each other and how we missed the fun we had together, how our lives had changed over the past months.. these were some of the things we were talking about. And of course we pulled each others legs endlessly. As for the rest of the things.. hush.. secret..
And then before we knew it , it was time to leave. How can any meet up end without the customary yet mandatory photo session? The cameras got clicking and we, as usual ended up with great pics to remind us of this yet another memorable meet. We took an auto back to station and yapped till the train came. And even after the train came, we weren’t quite done. The usual instructions and all.. Do this, do that, don’t do this…
Slowly the train jerked away and all I could do was wave and blow kisses in the air.
Oh, by the way, Peppermint [my first bestest friend], Thala[ my second bestest friend] and I met up. What did you think??
By the time I’m writing this, Peppermint would be back to the grind at Chicago and Thala would be getting ready to leave. Sigh, I’m gonna miss you guys.. Sniff.. Come back soon…
Peppermint & Thala: I intend to write about our previous “meet-ups”
too. What do you say??
